Beaver Women's Basketball Picks Up First Conference Victory

(BEMIDJI, Minn.) – The Minot State women's basketball team had a great shooting night, leading to their first conference victory of the season. Minot State won the clash of the Beavers 72-65.
 
Minot State was able to get off to a quick start to the game with a 9-0 run. MSU was not able to sustain the lead, however, as Bemidji State followed with an 11-0 run of their own to take an early 11-9 lead. The remainder of the quarter went back-and-forth as it ended with the Beavers from Bemidji leading 17-14.
 
Minot State started the second quarter well, going on a 6-0 run early to tie the game at 22. MSU would continue to play well, outscoring Bemidji State over the next couple of minutes to take a 29-25 lead. Minot State would close out the half, leading 31-29.
 
The second half would start with BSU tying the game at 31 on the first possession, then Minot State being able to gain a little bit of control, going on a 6-0 run with baskets by Mariah Payne, Haley Hildenbrand, and Calli Delsman. As was the case for the majority of the game, BSU would come right back to tie it up at 39. Beyond that, they would continue their momentum, getting out to a 47-42 lead. Minot State would battle back, Payne would score four straight keying a 6-0 Minot State run. Going into the fourth Bemidji State would hold a 49-48 lead.
 
Early in the fourth quarter, Minot State would get a little bit of control, taking a 56-51 lead. MSU continued to keep their foot on the gas, taking a 63-55 lead. Bemidji State would run off five straight points, cutting the MSU lead to 63-60, before Minot State would seal the game over the last few minutes, outscoring Bemidji State 9-5 to earn the 72-65 win.
 
Mariah Payne scored 25 points to lead the Beavers. She was joined by Bethany Theodore, scoring a season-high 20 points. Anna Counts also scored in double figures, chipping in 10 points. The Beavers were led in rebounding by Payne grabbing eight boards.
 
Minot State is back at it tomorrow, looking to continue their strong play against Minnesota Crookston.
