Wilson, Counts Lead Beaver Ladies to Weekend Sweep

(MINOT, N.D.) – The Minot State women's basketball team defeated the Upper Iowa Peacocks by a score of 73-54 to sweep the weekend set in the MSU Dome.

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead in the first frame and led 19-5 after one period. Minot State enjoyed a 15-0 run between the first and second quarters. The MSU defense carried over from the previous night and continued to stifle the competition. The Upper Iowa offense found a bit of a rhythm in the second quarter but Minot State secured their lead and held on to a 20-point advantage at halftime. The Peacocks won the second half but trailed by too many to mount a comeback and Minot State celebrated their win.

The Beavers were led by forward Mollie Wilson who scored a career-high 19 points on 73% shooting from the field. Anna Counts, Bethany Theodore, and Mariah Payne also scored in double-figures with 16, 11, and 10, respectively. Counts finished off a double-double with 11 rebounds to lead the Beavs in that statistical category followed by Calli Delsman with 10. Payne, who struggled to score in the first half, helped the team in other ways by dishing out eight assists.

Upper Iowa's offense was led by Brooke Evenson with 10 points. Evenson was the only Peacock in double-figures. Jessica Musgrave was active on the glass with a team-high six rebounds and an impressive 9-for-10 mark from the free throw line.

Minot State improved their records to 6-16 overall and 3-15 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa is now 3-21 overall and 2-16 in conference play.

The Beavers will be back in the MSU Dome for their final two home games this season when they host Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State on Feb. 14 and 15, respectively.
