CROOKSTON, MN --
Sam Ohlrich leads the way with career-high 20 points to lift Minot State to a 72-61 victory against the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles on the road Friday.
The Beavers (3-4, 1-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Ohlrich, who had a career-high 20 points and two blocks.
Max Cody added 17 points and four assists and
Melvin Newbern chipped in as well with his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
MSU snaps a two-game losing skid with the 11-point victory on the road.
Minot State out-rebounded Minnesota-Crookston 38-29 in Friday's game, led by Newbern's 13 boards. The Beavers also grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and scored 11-second chance points.
Minot State's defense held Minnesota-Crookston to only 36 percent shooting from the field, including 22.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed four-second chance points while Minot State cleared 27 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
Minot State started out the scoring by going on a 9-0 run, culminating in a three from
Cam'ron Dunfee, to take an early lead with 17:16 left in the first half. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 35-27 advantage. Minot State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 11 of its 35 total points.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Cody's layup, to grow the lead to 70-53 with 2:20 to go in the contest. The Golden Eagles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 72-61 win. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 12 of its 37 total points.
