MARSHALL, MN --
Max Cody scored a team-high 16 points and
Melvin Newbern registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but the Minot State men's basketball team fell to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 83-64 on the road Friday.
Minot State slips to 1-2 overall and SMSU improved to 2-1 on the season. Both teams remain 0-0 in the NSIC with all four of these contests' non-conference matchups.
In addition to Newbern's double-double, the Beavers were led by Cody, who put up 16 points and four assists, and by
Kody Dwyer, who added 14 points.
The Beavers shot 46.6% (27-58) as a team with
Cam'ron Dunfee adding eight points and three rebounds.
Minot State forced 17 Southwest Minnesota State turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Friday's game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 19 points on the other end of the floor.
Sam Ohlrich made his first three-point bucket of the season on his only shot attempt in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-0, Minot State went on a 9-0 run with 19:09 left in the first half, culminating in a three from
Jaxon Gunville, to take a 9-3 lead. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 41-33.
Southwest Minnesota State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing an 82-58 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Gunville's three, to shrink the deficit to 82-64 with 38 seconds to go in the contest.
The Mustangs outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 83-64. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 40 points in the lane compared to 26 for SMSU.
