MINOT, N.D. – The thrill of the home crowd at Maysa Arena ignited a fire in the Minot State men's hockey team, fueling the Beavers who completed a weekend sweep of in-state rival the University of Jamestown.
Scoring a pair of goals in each of the first two periods and getting 17 saves on the night from goalie
Riley Wallace, Minot State blanked the Jimmies, 4-0, on Friday.
"I think it was just a matter of playing in front of your home fans, being energetic," Minot State first-year head coach
Wyatt Waselenchuk said. "It's tough not to get excited having 1,500 people there routing for you, we just kind of fed off that energy."
The home crowd's energy led to an early 1-0 lead as
Eric Soar scored with 5 minutes, 24 seconds gone in the contest, giving the Beavers (2-0-0-0 overall) the early lead, and the eventual game winner.
A big change from the night before when Minot State needed overtime to pull off a season-opening 3-2 win at Jamestown in start to the two teams' home-and-home series.
"We talked pregame about just cleaning up some things, being a little sharper, a little crisper in everything we did, and we found the back of the net," Waselenchuk said.
Just 3:31 later,
Drew Carter, who assisted on Soar's goal, netted one of his own off an assist from
Carter Barley. Barley also assisted on the first goal for Minot State, as well.
Davis Sheldon made it a 3-0 game with 2:54 gone in the second period off an assist from
Nick Doyle, then Doyle netted one of his own 6:12 into the second, capping the game's scoring. Soar and
Reid Arnold had assists on the final goal of the game.
Plenty of offense for Wallace in net who, with the help of his defensive teammates, earned his first shutout of the young season.
"
Davis Sheldon and
Connor Navrot had a monster weekend for us," Waselenchuk said, adding, "Jordan Roberts was fantastic for us, playing on the defensive side of the puck, something he might not be used to.
"We had a lot of big efforts, on the back-end
Nick Doyle stepped in tonight and did what he does,
Paul O'Connor was fantastic; we had some key contributors all weekend, but it was good team win for us."
