Beavers Extinguish No. 3 Flames in Weekend Sweep

MINOT, N.D. ‒ The Beavers celebrated a Saturday night sweep in the Magic City as they sent nationally ranked #3 Liberty University Flames home with a pair of losses this weekend. MSU continues their season undefeated, with an improved record of 4-0-0.

"It feels good," responds head coach Wyatt Waselenchuk when asked how it feels to beat the number three team in the nation. Waselenchuk continues, "I truly feel like us up here in our little corner here by the Canadian border we don't get the respect we maybe deserve. I know they (the team) use it as a chip on their shoulder. We embrace it."

Coming off a win from the night before, the Beavers didn't have as hot of a start in this second game. The first period saw no goals from MSU, but LU found a way to put one on the board for themselves, giving them a 1-0 lead.

Minot State came alive during the second period, scoring four goals and only allowing one into their net from the Flames. Jordan Robertson (6:12), Carter Barley (9:03), Jared Hamm (13:40), and Davis Sheldon (18:04) each contributed to the Beavers comeback to give them the lead, 4-2.

Josh Pederson and Eric Soar assisted Jake Bestul in his 3rd period goal (3:52) that put MSU over LU 5-2. The defense held strong and forbade the Flames from scoring in the final period of the two-day competition between the teams, granting Minot State their fourth win on their 2021-2022 season.

Reece Henry, Landyn Cochrane, Jordan Robertson, and Eric Soar all gained assists on the night. Beavers goalie Jake Anthony once again had an impressive night in between the pipes, posting 31 saves on the night.

With a now 4-0 record, Coach Waselenchuk refers to the team's "5 minutes at a time" mindset as a key in their success moving forward, "it might sound cliche, but I yell it a thousand times a game on the bench." He continues, "we break it down into 4 little mini games throughout a period and when you win enough of those, good things are going to happen." The Beavers have done a phenomenal job this season "making good things happen" as they remain undefeated and are now ranked #15 overall in the ACHA Division I standings.

Minot State returns to the Maysa Arena on Friday, November 5th at 7:30p.m, where they will host the University of Illinois.
