MINOT, N.D. – The Beavers started strong, then held on, completing a season-opening weekend sweep at Maysa Arena.
The Minot State women's hockey team took a 3-0 lead over visiting Midland then withstood a comeback charge by the Warriors as the host Beavers won their second-straight one-goal game over Midland with a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.
"Coming out of home-opening weekend with two wins is a fantastic feeling," Minot State coach
Ryan Miner said as the Beavers also scored a 2-1 win over Midland on Friday. "The team battled 'till the final buzzer and earned every inch.
"There were moments of adversity through both games and our leadership kept the team motivated to rally through," Minot State's coach added. "When we were playing our game, it was fun to watch."
The Beavers (2-0-0 overall) were on their game early, dominating the first period and outshooting Midland (1-2-1) 17-3, but the Warriors goalie Hannah Stone kept her team in the contest, turning aside 16 shots.
The lone shot to find the back of the net came off the stick of
Anna German, an unassisted, short-handed goal with 9 minutes, 14 seconds gone in the game.
On top 1-0 heading into the second period, Minot State began stretching its lead as
Megan Norris scored her first of the season with 2:12 gone off assists from German and
Story Navrot, then
Riley Ball's second of the year, off an assist from German, made it a 3-0 game with 9:03 left in the session.
Just enough as Midland made a charge with a late second-period goal and one early in the third before the Beavers thwarted the comeback.
Jordan Ivanco finished with 25 saves in goal, preserving the lead and earning the win for the Beavers, who after the pair of season-opening wins over the weekend now prepare for a three-game road trip to Colorado to play the University of Colorado next Friday and Saturday, then Colorado State University on Sunday, Oct. 10.
"It was nice to see some new players get some points on the board, and the overall performance of our freshmen that were in the lineup this weekend," Miner said, adding, "we will enjoy the sweep for the rest of the evening, and get back to work tomorrow in preparation for our trip to Colorado."
