MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team got a 35-point showing from the bench on the way to a 76-64 win against the Valley City State Vikings at home Monday.
The Beavers (3-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Amber Stevahn, who had 21 points and four assists. Anna Counts added 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four blocks off the bench and Kate Head helped out with 14 points, five assists and three steals.
Minot State out-rebounded Valley City State 41-33 in Monday's game, led by Counts' nine boards. The Beavers also collected 10 offensive rebounds and scored four second chance points.
The Minot State defense forced 21 Valley City State turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Emma Mogen led the way individually for the Beavers with four steals.
How It Happened
Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Valley City State kept adding to that lead, building a 31-17 advantage before Minot State went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Stevahn, to narrow its deficit to 31-27. The Beavers kept the rally going and overtook the Vikings on a three from Counts with 00:01Â left for a 34-33 halftime advantage. Minot State forced six Valley City State turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.
Valley City State then took a 39-38 lead following intermission before Minot State went on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Stevahn, to grab a 48-39 lead with 5:00 to go in the third. Before the end of the third period, the Beavers added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 59-47 edge. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 25 points in the paint.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Stevahn's layup, to grow the lead to 74-58 with 2:46 to go in the contest. The Vikings narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-64 win. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
