Beavers fall on the road in Battle of the Big Lake

MINOT, N.D. - The Beavers threw everything they had at the Marauders on Saturday afternoon but in the end, the Battle of the Big Lake trophy ended up changing hands.

The Minot State football team scored on a variety of big plays - on a fake punt, on an interception, and on a 75-yard bomb - but it wasn't enough to best the University of Mary which snapped a five-game Beaver win streak in the head-to-head series with a 49-31 victory in NSIC football.

The Marauders (4-6 overall, 3-2 North Division) jumped on top 15-0 before the Beavers' first big play, a 63-yard touchdown pass from Kyle VanBerkom on a fake punt to Knlyen Miller-Levi, which got the visitors on the board.

The University of Mary answered by stretching its lead to 35-10 early in the third quarter, though, taking control of the Battle of the Big Lake.

But that didn't break the battling spirit of the Beavers as got a second big play from Miller-Levi, who picked off a pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown, which began the comeback.

Peyton Lamoureux hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass from Marshaun Campbell and Ali Mohamed scored on a 4-yard touchdown run as Minot State (1-9, 0-5) closed to 49-31 back, but could get no closer.

Mohamed and Lamoureux, like Miller-Levi, turned in big days for the Beavers as Mohamed ran for 116 yards on 20 carries, giving him 1,034 on the season with one game left to be played. Lamoureux finished the day with 126 yards receiving on six catches for his fourth 100-plus yard receiving game this season.

Campbell led the way at quarterback finishing the day completing 12-of-17 passes for 179 yards, while JT Snow led the defense with 11 tackles and a half-sack, and Will Jordan added eight tackles for Minot State, which next hosts Concordia-St. Paul next Saturday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. in the season finale for both teams.
