No. 1 Beavers sweep Fighting Illini in back-to-back blowouts

MINOT, ND ‒ Sweep city or Magic City? The Minot State men's hockey team is making it hard to tell the difference. It was an 8-2 defeat over University of Illinois this Saturday night that advanced the Beavers' undefeated record to 7-0-0 as they confidently sit at the top of the ACHA polls as the no. 1 team in the nation.

Coming into the second matchup of their two-game series against the Fighting Illini, the Beavers were confident after a 5-0 defeat the previous night. It was a full team effort as only one goal went unassisted by Jordan Robertson, which wasn't until the very last period of the night. "We all have a really good chemistry together and it's good to see that we can put up eight goals like that as a team." notes forward Reece Henry on the teamwork on the ice.

Unlike the night prior where they took the lead early on, the Beavers had to come back from behind after falling to UI 1-0 early the first period. It wasn't until just 26 seconds before the end of the first period that Carter Barley set Drew Carter up for a perfect shot to tie up the game at 1-1.

Minot State has shown a trend of lighting up the rink during the second period with goal after goal after their first intermission‒something they did Saturday night. Reece Henry scored a pair of goals to open and close the second period, with assists by Nick Doyle, Landyn Cochrane, and Paul O'connor. Drew Carter and Davis Sheldon were assisted by Pawluk, Cochrane, and Henry to stretch the Beavers' lead to 5-1 as they closed out the second 20 minutes of game regulation at the Maysa Arena.

A 5-1 lead wasn't enough for MSU as they kept the intensity up all the way through the end of the night on Saturday, sneaking three more goals past UI's goaltender to put them over the Fighting Illini 8-2 to end the night.

Improving their undefeated record to 7-0-0 as the No. 1 team in the nation, "it feels really great", recalls Brayden Pawluk on the Beavers' accomplishments. The Beavers swept No. 3 Liberty just three weeks ago, is one of the only two remaining undefeated teams, and currently leads the country in the ACHA Division I. "It feels nice to see us get rewarded for all our hard work. We've been showing the rest of the league what we're about and what to expect as we're heading further into the season."

Beaver fans are sure to expect continuous success from this team as they move forward into late November. Minot State will travel to Fremont, Nebraska to face off against Midland University on Friday, Nov. 12th and Nov. 13th in a two-game away series. The next home game hosted at the Maysa Arena will be Tuesday, Nov. 16th as MSU hosts #11 University of Jamestown.
