Jamestown, ND ‒ Minot State traveled to University of Jamestown on a redemption trip Saturday to earn back a win after a tough loss to the Jimmies Friday night. The Beavers and Jimmies reamined neck and neck until the final minute and fifteen seconds in the game, where
Reid Arnold and
Reece Henry set up
Wayde Johannesson for the winning shot that put MSU on top of UJ 4-3.
Storming the ice for round five of the top-ranked instate rivalry, both teams efficiently executed strong defense throughout the entire first twenty minutes of play that resulted in a scoreless first period. Tensions rose on the ice with five penalties in that period including some roughing between the Jimmies and Beavers, but neither of the two were able to push through on any power play advantages.
Halfway into the second period the only numbers that were changing on the scoreboard were the seconds on the clock ticking down as the score remained 0-0.
Reid Arnold and
Jared Hamm broke through the barrier that was suppressing the Beavers from taking the lead as Arnold set Hamm up to score the first goal of the night on Jamestown's goalie, Tyson Brouwer. In their friday night faceoff at the Maysa Arena, MSU struggled to work past Brouwer's defensive success between the UJ pipes and looked to improve their strategy within 24 hours of their next matchup. The Beavers' big improvements in a small amount of time showed in the second period, as
Justin Metcalf and
Drew Carter tacked two more onto the board, assisted by Bestul, Cochrane, and Barley. UJ found a way to get just one goal past Beaver goalie,
Riley Wallace, ending the second period at 3-1 in favor of Minot State.
The Jamestown Jimmies responded to the Beavers' offense and rallied back two goals in the third period, tying the game up at 3-3. Just four minutes after jamestown's game-tying goal,
Wayde Johannesson took matters into his own hands and pushed MSU past UJ with barely a minute remaining in the game.
Reid Arnold and
Reece Henry's tag-team work to push the puck over to Johannesson sealed the deal, allowing the Beavers to redeem themselves on Jamestown's home ice.
This week of play was a challenge for No. 2 Minot State against No. 10 University of Jamestown as the Jimmies broke the Beavers' previous 4-game win streak on MSU's territory. Minot State's victory over Jamestown has them going into winter break with a 16-2-0-0 record. After the holiday break, the Beavers resume play in 2022 at Grand Canyon University in Tucson, Arizona on January 6th. Puck is set to drop at 6:30p.m. MT.
