MINOT, N.D. – The Beavers finished strong.
The Minot State women's hockey team dominated the day Sunday, winning their fifth straight and completing a weekend sweep of the Dakota College at Bottineau with a 5-1 win over the Ladyjacks at the Maysa Arena.
The win caps the 2021 portion of the fourth-ranked Beavers schedule as Minot State now is off for a month to celebrate Christmas and New Year's, returning to the ice on Jan. 15 and 16 when Minot State plays a pair of games at Lindenwood (Mo.).
Focused on finishing the first semester of the season strong, the Beavers withstood an early power-play opportunity for the Ladyjacks (5-3-0 overall) and took control with two goals in a 37-second span midway through the first period.
Alisha O'Hara scored her first of the day and second of the weekend off an assist by
Denali Sigurdson with 11:11 gone in the game, then 37 seconds later
Mia Mckee tapped in a goal off a
Makena Welby assist, a power-play goal for the Beavers (14-3-0) that gave them a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers stretched their lead to 3-0 when
Megan Norris scored off a
Jessica Walker assist with 9:35 gone in the second and looked well on their way to a dominating victory before the Ladyjacks scored late in the period to close the gap.
Still on top 3-1, Minot State iced the win as O'Hara scored a power-play goal with 6:01 left, off an
Ensley Fendelet assist, for a commanding 4-1 lead.
Omalley Eslinger then capped the scoring with one more insurance goal for Minot State with 3:51 remaining, finishing off assists from
Gillian Gervin and
Aspen Cooper for the 5-1 lead.
Jordan Ivanco made 23 saves in goal in the win for Minot State, which also topped Dakota College of Bottineau, 3-1, on Saturday on the road.
