Five Beavers score double figures as Minot State beats Minnesota State-Moorhead 88-74

MOORHEAD, MN --The Minot State men's basketball team shot 52.2 percent from three-point range on the way to an 88-74 win against the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons on the road Saturday.

The Beavers (8-1, 2-1) had five players score in double figures, led by Eli Cave, who had 19 points. Jaxon Gunville added 18 points off of the bench and Cam'ron Dunfee chipped in as well with 12 points.

The Minot State offense made hay from downtown, pouring in 12 threes on 23 attempts. Gunville hit six treys for the Beavers in the contest.

Also, Melvin Newbern surpassed an impressive career milestone as his eight rebounds in the win gives him 1,005 rebounds in his collegiate career which began at North Dakota State College of Science (560 rebounds), and included a season at Montana State Billings (201 rebounds) before he came to Minot State (244 rebounds). 

How It Happened

After playing to a 2-2 tie, Minot State went on an 8-0 run with 17:02 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Dunfee, to take a 10-2 lead. The Beavers then added 10 points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 44-26 advantage. Minot State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 44 points close to the basket.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Max Cody's jumper, to grow the lead to 80-65 with 2:49 to go in the contest. The Dragons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 88-74 win. Minot State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting seven shots from deep to score 21 of its 44 points.
