MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Beavers never let up and scored another victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday afternoon.
Jessica Walker scored twice and added an assist to lead the third-ranked Minot State women's hockey team, which scored a 6-2 win over host Minnesota in Women's Midwest Collegiate Hockey action.
The win was the third straight this season for the Beavers over the Golden Gophers who fell twice last month in North Dakota. The two teams play the fourth and final game of their season series Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Minnesota.
"Getting that first win on the road was a good start to the weekend," Minot State head coach
Ryan Miner said. "We continued to get better as the game went on and it showed."
The Beavers (11-3-1 overall) started strong as
Denali Sigurdson opened the scoring just 3 minutes, 12 seconds into the contest, netting a goal off assists from
Jessica Walker and
Lauren Blight.
The host Golden Gophers (2-5-0) answered with their first of the game just 2:07 later and the game stayed knotted up over the coming 10 minutes until Walker scored off a
Riley Ball assist for a 2-1 Minot State lead after one period.
Haley Wickham netted what proved to be the game-winner just 1:29 into the second period off assists from Ball and Sigurdson, then
Mackenzie Heide scored the first of three power-play goals, unassisted, with 14:55 left in the second stanza.
"The team scored three power-play goals, something that we have been working on recently and their hard work paid off," Miner said.
The Golden Gophers got one back midway through the second period, but the Beavers iced the win with a pair of power-play goals late in the third period as Walker and
Anna German scored just 20 seconds apart for the final 6-2 win.
Megan Norris and Wickham assisted on Walker's goal and
Makena Welby set up German's.
Haylie Biever made 10 saves in goal over the first two periods for Minot State, then
Jordan Ivanco played the third period and added two more saves for the Beavers, who outshot Minnesota 37-14 on the day.
