MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State (10-3) hockey team picked up a win over Midland University (8-9) last night. The Beavers earned a second-period goal to take the lead and held on to claim the victory, despite a late charge from the Warriors.
 
Midland started the scoring early in the first period with an Allison Conybear score after a Kayla Flanigan assist. The Beavers evened the tally later in the period when Alisha O'Hara slapped one past the goalie. Story Navrot assisted on the Beavers' first goal.
 
In the second period, Minot State dominated the scoring and took a 3-1 lead before the second intermission. Ashley Spence put MSU on top with help from Haley Wickham and Kenzie Heide. Later in the stanza, Jensen Smigelsky joined the party and extended the Beavers' advantage to 3-1 after a Denali Sigurdson assist.
 
The Warriors restarted play in the third period looking to make a comeback. Midland did just that with a goal from Flanigan after a Conybear assist. The Warriors' attempt at tying the game or taking the lead was quickly halted, though, and the Beavers survived their opponents' late push.
 
Jordan Ivanco earned the win in goal for Minot State with 22 total saves. Midland's goaltender, Hannah Stone, had an equal number of saves but recorded the team's loss.
 
The second game between Midland and Minot State scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, Feb. 27 has been canceled.
 
The Beavers will be back on the ice against local competition with a weekend home-and-home series against Dakota College at Bottineau. MSU and DCB will face off on Saturday, Mar. 13 in Bottineau, and again on Sunday, Mar. 14 in Minot.
