ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Beavers evened the score with fourth-ranked Lindenwood on Sunday night, and now move on to their next Top-5 foe.
The Minot State women's hockey team scored a dramatic comeback win as
Aspen Cooper netted the overtime winner with 2 minutes, 21 seconds left in the extra session, lifting the sixth-ranked Beavers to a 4-3 win over the Lions.
The Beavers now continued a six-game road trip on Tuesday playing at No. 5 McKendree.
"Tonight was a great bounce-back win for our team," Minot State assistant coach
Anthony Swearingen said. "The team came together and everyone contributed in the effort. As a coaching staff we are proud of our leadership group for helping prepare the girls for the task at hand."
After falling Saturday in the two teams' first meeting of the season, Minot State (15-4-0 overall, 7-2-0 WMCH) found itself trailing headed into the second period 1-0 after the Lions scored in the final seconds of the opening period in game two Sunday night.
Cooper's first of the evening, though, with 8:02 gone in the second period evened the score, then
Haley Wickham scored an unassisted goal with 6:11 left in the session for a brief 2-1 Minot State advantage.
Another late goal by the hosts sent the contest into the third knotted 2-2, though, before
Jenae Cockerill scored her first collegiate goal as the mid-season transfer put away assists by
Megan Norris and Mia McKee with 11:46 left in regulation for a 3-2 Beaver lead.
Another short-lived lead as 46 seconds later the Lions tied it again and the game stayed even at 3-3 into overtime.
Once into the extra session, Minot State, which outshot Lindenwood 34-19 on the night, iced the win when Cooper scored her second of the game off assists from Wickham and
Anna German.
"It was great to see Jenae get her first goal as a Beaver, and great to see Aspen excel in crunch time when her team needed her," Swearingen said.
The assist was the second of the night for Wickham who had three points in the win, as she and Norris had the assists on Cooper's first goal that got Minot State on the scoreboard back in the second period.
Haylie Biever finished with 16 saves in the win for the Beavers, who get a day off to travel then return to action for their third and fourth games of a six-game, eight-day road-trip at fifth-ranked McKendree on Tuesday and Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. each day.
