Stevahn scores 30 points in Minot State's 81-71 victory over Minnesota State, Mankato

MINOT, ND --Amber Stevahn collected 30 points to help lead the Minot State women's basketball team past the Minnesota State, Mankato Mavericks 81-71 at home Friday.

The Beavers (7-10, 5-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Stevahn, who put together a double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Lucy Chapman added 12 points and seven rebounds and Natasha Elliott chipped in as well with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals from the bench.

Minot State shared the ball well in Friday's game, racking up 18 assists on 29 made field goals. Kate Head's 10 assists led the Beavers.

The Minot State defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 14 Minnesota State-Mankato turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Elliott's three steals led the way individually for the Beavers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-5, Minot State went on a 9-0 run with 5:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Head, to take a 14-9 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-15 advantage. Minot State capitalized on six Minnesota State, Mankato turnovers in the period, turning them into nine points on the other end of the floor.

Minot State built the lead to 22-20 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 5:05 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Chapman, to increase its lead to 30-20. The Beavers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 36-26 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.

After intermission, Minot State added to its advantage and owned a 60-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Mollie Wilson's layup, to grow the lead to 77-63 with 2:03 to go in the contest. The Mavericks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 81-71 win. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its 21 total points.
