No. 2 Beavers ring in New Year with 4-0 shutout against Grand Canyon University

PHOENIX, AZ — Minot State remains undefeated on the road as they improve their travel record to 7-0-0 after defeating the GCU Antelopes 4-0 Thursday night. Carter Barley scored 75% of the Beavers' goals against Grand Canyon, making him now the highest scorer on the Beavers' roster with 13 goals this season and 28 points overall. Eric Soar struck an impressive night offensively on the ice as well, earning assists on three out of the four goals made, making him now tied for second-highest in assists this season for MSU.

Scoreless were the first twenty minutes of play between GCU and MSU, as both teams were unable to break through the 0-0 tie throughout the first period. An Antelope interference penalty gave Minot State a two-minute power play advantage they unfortunately were unable to capitalize on, closing out the first period with no goals.

It was Dylan Dent's holding penalty just 0:49 into the second period that opened up another PP opportunity for the Beavers; one they weren't going to miss this time. Eric Soar and Jared Hamm each assisted in setting Barley up for the first power play goal of the night and giving MSU a 1-0 lead over GCU. Less than four minutes later Soar (asst) and Barley (goal) teamed up again in their offensive strikes, this time with an additional assist by Paul O'Connor, allowing the Beavers some insurance with a 2-0 lead over the Antelopes.

Barley and Soar kept the offensive chemistry flowing as they headed into the final period of the game. This time Jagger Thiessen got in on the scoring action as him and Soar set Barley up for the third goal of the game 4:45 into the the third. Almost exactly ten minutes later, Justin Metcalf took one to the GCU net by himself, scoring the final goal of the Beavers vs Antelopes matchup unassisted. Metcalf sealed the deal with the 4-0 lead as Grand Canyon was unable to get a puck into the MSU net all night long, thanks to the defensive work by Beavers' goalie Riley Wallace. Wallace saw twenty-seven shots come his way and not one got by the brick wall-ace.

Minot State started off 2022 with a bang as they improved their record to 17-2-0-0 after their first game of their weekend in the west series. The Beavers will travel from Phoenix to Tucson this Friday, January 7th where they will take on No. 14 University of Arizona at the Tucson Convention Center. Puck drops at 8:30p.m CT.
