JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The first-ever meeting between in-state rivals went a few extra minutes.
Host and first-year program Jamestown tied the game late, but the Minot State women's hockey team still found a way to prevail as
Ensley Fendelet scored with 1 minutes, 15 seconds left in overtime to lift the Beavers to a 4-3 victory Friday night.
The goal was the first of the season for Fendelet and came on the power play off assists from
Megan Norris and
Anna German.
The OT goal helped the Beavers (2-1-0 overall) survive a battle with the first-year Jimmies (1-2-1), who twice erased Minot State leads.
Sydney Spicer and
Aspen Cooper each scored a goal in the first period to get the Beavers off to a good start, but the Jimmies answered with two goals in the second.
Riley Ball snapped the 2-2 tie with 6:52 gone in the third, but the host Jimmies had one more comeback in them, tying it with 7:53 left in regulation.
In the extra session, Fendelet broke the tie with her first of the season with 1:15 left.
Alisha O'Hara assisted on Spicer goal, and German, who had three assists in the win, set up Cooper's first-period goal.
German's second assist came on Ball's third-period goal, and
Krissy Rink added an assist, as well.
Jordan Ivanco finished with 29 saves in the win for Minot State, which hosts Jamestown in a quick rematch on Saturday at the Maysa Arena at 3:45 p.m.
