MINOT, N.D. - With time winding down, the Beavers finally cashed in with the winner.
Peppering the Liberty net all night, it was shot No. 40 that snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Minot State men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Flames, completing a weekend sweep for the Beavers.
Minot State also beat Liberty 4-2 on Friday night.
Carter Barley scored his first of the year with 2 minutes, 19 seconds left in the game for Minot State (4-0-0 overall), which scored early in the first period then continue to fire shots at Liberty goalie Hunter Virostek (39 saves) but couldn't get anything past him for the longest time.
Meanwhile, the Flames (4-2-0) took advantage of their goalie's stellar play, tying the game with 40 seconds left in the second period on a Matt Bartel goal.
Drew Carter set up the game-winner for the Beavers with a pass from behind the Flames net to Barley. It was the second assist of the night for Carter, who teamed with
Sheldin Howard to set up
Brayden Pawluk with 9 minutes gone in the first for a power-play goal.
That 1-0 lead held up for Minot State until the final 40 seconds of the second period when Bartel beat Beavers goalie
Jake Anthony on the power-play for the Flames.
Anthony, making his fourth straight start of the season, finished with 20 saves in his fourth straight win.
Minot State, off to a perfect start to the young season, is back in action at home again next weekend hosting Midland (Neb.) on Friday and Saturday night with both games starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Maysa Arena.
