MINOT, N.D. – Playing shorthanded isn't necessarily supposed to provide a spark, but Saturday it did for the Minot State men's hockey team.
Scoring a pair of shorthanded goals just 28 seconds apart helped the second-ranked Beavers break free from Williston State en route to a 9-3 win at the Maysa Arena.
Reid Arnold scored the first shorthanded goal with 8 minutes, 20 seconds gone in the second period, unassisted, pushing Minot State's lead to 5-3 at the time.
Just 28 seconds later,
Drew Carter scored another unassisted shorthanded goal for the Beavers, pushing them comfortably in front, up 6-3.
From there Minot State (9-0-0 overall) cruised to the win as
Tre Sortland made 18 saves in his first start of the season in goal, preserving the win while
Connor Navrot added a pair of third-period goals and
Landyn Cochrane also scored for the Beavers.
Minot State got on the board with a goal each by
Jared Hamm,
Jagger Thiessen, and
Carter Barley for a 3-0 lead in the first, but the Tetons (0-5-0) chipped away, closing to 3-2 down, and after Joey Moffatt scored 4:36 into the second, Williston State cut it to 4-3 before the shorthanded goals broke the game open.
