MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State women's hockey team put in some extra work on Saturday night but earned the reward.
Going into overtime, the fifth-ranked Beavers bested No. 3 Midland, 4-3, at the Maysa Arena on a game-winning goal by Megan Norris with 2:01 left in the extra session.
That helped the Beavers (9-4-1 overall) earn a weekend split with the Warriors, who battled back from a two-goal deficit, and tied the game with a goal in the final 5 seconds to force overtime.
Ensley Fendelet got the Beavers on the board first, scoring with 6:12 left in the opening period, then just 37 seconds into the second period Jordan Kulbida scored as Minot State struck twice on the power-play.
Midland answered with a pair of second-period goals, sending the game into the final frame – of regulation – knotted up 2-2.
Fendelet broke the time with 4:23 left in regulation, and the Beavers were poised for the win until Callie Maguire scored a power-play goal with 5 seconds left for Midland to force overtime.
Once into the extra session, Minot State had chance after chance, but the final one came when Norris tucked the puck behind Warrior goalie Kayla Bailey, giving the Beavers the overtime win.
Haylie Biever finished with 13 saves in the victory as Minot State outshot Midland 25-16 on the night.
Minot State is back in action next Friday and Saturday as the Beavers host Jamestown on Friday, Dec. 9, then play at Jamestown on Saturday, Dec. 10.
