MINOT, N.D. – Minot State's
Ensley Fendelet had a hat trick and
Haylie Biever made 21 saves, leading the way as the Beavers toppled visiting Michigan State in a first-ever women's hockey meeting between the schools in the Battle of the MSUs.
Krissy Rink added a pair of goals for the second-ranked Beavers (22-4-0 overall), who skated away with an 8-0 win at the Maysa Arena. The two teams meet again on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the second and final game of their weekend series.
Jenae Cockerill scored what proved to be the game-winner for Minot State with 8 minutes, 35 seconds gone in the action off an assist from Mia McKee, then
Sydney Spicer scored a short-handed goal with 5:02 left in the first period for a 2-0 advantage.
That lead grew to 4-0 in the second period as Fendelet scored her first of the night, then
Riley Ball made it 4-0 before the Beavers iced the win with a third-period onslaught.
Fendelet and Rink each scored twice in the session to finish off a dominating performance by Minot State, which outshot the 13
th-ranked Spartans (8-6-0) 81-21 on the night.
Biever earned her fourth shutout on the season stopping all 21 Michigan State shots in the win for Minot State.
