Minot State softball scores pair of 9-1, 5-inning wins

MINOT, N.D. - The Minot State softball team stayed unbeaten on the young season, winning twice Saturday by 9-1 scores in five innings at their Bubble Invite.

Alina Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with an RBI in a 9-1 win over Valley City State to start the day, and Maggie Mercer was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in a 9-1 win over Dakota Wesleyan.

Reegan Floyd struck out seven in the first-game win, her first victory of the spring, and Jasmine Blizzard struck out five in the second game to earn her first win of the season.

Minot State closes the weekend tournament hosting NSIC foe Minnesota Crookston at 2 p.m. on Sunday in a nonconference contest.
 
GAME ONE: Minot State 9, Valley City State 1, 5 innings
Minot State got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Beavers put nine runs on the board and take down the Valley City State Vikings 9-1 Saturday.

Freshman Reegan Floyd (1-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State (2-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing two walks and striking out seven.

Junior Kilee Fehd led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a triple, two walks and an RBI. Senior Alina Gonzalez put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Senior Jamie Odlum also chipped in, going 2-for-3 for Minot State with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Junior Lenora Watson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board.

The Beavers then held the Vikings scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. The Minot State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Odlum, which brought the Beavers lead to 5-0.

Valley City State narrowed Minot State's lead to 5-1 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 9-1 in the fifth inning. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Gonzalez. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as Minot State coasted to the win.

Penner's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-3 day, and included two doubles. Watson made her contribution with a double, a triple and two RBIs, part of a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Senior Maggie Mercer also helped out for the Beavers, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBIs.
