MINOT, N.D. – It took a while to get on the board but once the Beavers found the back of the net, the goals came in bunches.
The Minot State women's hockey team dominated for the second straight day in the Battle of MSUs, rolling to a 7-1 win over No. 13-ranked Michigan State on Saturday at the Maysa Arena.
Scoreless after the first period, second-ranked Minot State (23-4-0 overall) finally broke the tie with 11 minutes, 9 seconds gone in the second period when
Maiya Aschberg scored off a
Jenae Cockerill assist, opening the offensive floodgates.
Just 1:33 later
Alisha O'Hara scored off assists from
Sydney Spicer and
Denali Sigurdson for a 2-0 lead.
The game stayed that way until the final two minutes of the second session when Minot State again struck in bunches as Cockerill this time scored, off assists from Aschberg and Sigurdson, with 1:48 left until the break, then
Riley Ball made it 4-0 just 1:09 later off assists from
Haley Wickham and
Ensley Fendelet.
Comfortable in command, the Beavers stretched their lead in the third as Sigurdson, Wickham, and Fendelet all scored for a 7-0 lead before the Spartans (8-7-0) finally got on the board with 6:48 left to play.
Jordan Ivanco made 31 saves in what was the ninth straight win for the Beavers, who outshot Michigan State 65-32.
Minot State now gets next weekend off before wrapping up the regular season at home hosting Midland on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19, with puck drop each day at 4:30 p.m.
