Minot State softball settles for split, tops Saint Michael's before falling in 8 innings

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Minot State softball team went to extra innings before having to settle for a split on the Beavers second day of play at The Spring Games as Minot State topped Saint Michael's (Vermont) 5-0 to start the day, then fell 3-1 to Wayne State (Mich.) in 8 innings on Tuesday.

Pitching set the tone all day for the Beavers who got a 10-strikeout shutout from Reegan Floyd to beat the Purple Knights, then Trinity Valentine was dominant in the second game as she scattered three hits and struck out three, but Minot State's offense could not provide the victory.

Now 3-1 in the tournament, Minot State gets Wednesday off before returning the action in The Spring Games on Thursday against No. 8-ranked West Chester of Pennsylvania and New Haven.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- 
Freshman Reegan Floyd was dealing on Tuesday, hurling a four-hit shutout to lead the Minot State Beavers over the Saint Michael's Purple Knights 5-0.

Floyd (6-0) went the distance for Minot State (15-3), giving up four hits, walking one and striking out 10.

Senior Kiera Shwaluk led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with two RBIs. Junior Lenora Watson put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Junior Jazmin Karununga also chipped in, going 2-for-4 for Minot State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Minot State's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Watson and a two-run single from Shwaluk.

The Beavers also added a run in the third inning to complete their scoring in the ballgame.

Senior Trinity Valentine (6-3) got the ball to start for Minot State (15-4) and took the loss. The right-hander went eight innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits, allowing two walks and striking out three.

Senior Jamie Odlum led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers put a run on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Minot State got on the board thanks to Odlum's RBI double with two outs. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Wayne State (Mich.) scored three times over the remaining five innings to grab the 3-1 win.
