Beavers get walk-off win over 8th-ranked West Chester then roll past New Haven

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Back in action after a day off in Florida, the Minot State softball team pulled out a thrilling, extra-inning win over a Top-10 foe then got the offensive rolling in a five-inning win for another 2-0 day at The Spring Games.

The Beavers rallied in the eighth inning for a walk-off, 5-4 win over No. 8-ranked West Chester of Pennsylvania to start the day, the wrapped up action with a 17-1 win over New Haven (Conn.) in five innings to finish off action on Thursday.

With the pair of victories, Minot State is now 5-1 in The Spring Games as the Beavers prepare to take on Purdue University Northwest and No. 7-ranked Saint Anslem (N.H.) on Friday at The Spring Games.

Minot State 5, West Chester of Pennsylvania 4, 8 innings
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- 
The Minot State Beavers needed eight innings to get the job done, but earned the 5-4 extra-innings win, walking it off on a single off the bat of sophomore Brooklyn Morrison to claim victory over the West Chester (PA) Golden Rams Thursday.

Senior Trinity Valentine (7-3) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State (16-4). The right-hander went eight innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out seven.

Morrison led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBIs. Junior Jazmin Karununga put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4. Junior Jamie Odlum also helped out, going 1-for-4 for Minot State with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Minot State plated two runs when Morrison left the yard with Odlum aboard.

The Beavers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 3-2. Minot State scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of Karununga, which brought the score level at 3-3.

West Chester (PA) then broke the tied and took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth before Minot State scored two runs in the bottom half of the eighth to grab the win, walking it off on an RBI single off the bat of Morrison.

Sophomore Jasmine Blizzard had everything working on Thursday, striking out 10 New Haven hitters over five innings of work to help power the Minot State Beavers over the Chargers 17-1.

In addition to her 10 strikeouts, Blizzard (2-1) tossed five innings, giving up one run on three hits and walking one for Minot State (17-4).

At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Jamie Odlum, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a double, two walks and two RBIs. Junior Maggie Mercer put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Junior Alina Gonzalez also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning, culminating in a run-scoring single from freshman Chesie McLaughlin.

The Chargers then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 3-1 until the Beavers expanded their advantage in the second inning. The Minot State offense exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Gonzalez, which brought the score to 10-1 in favor of the Beavers.

Minot State kept New Haven scoreless before building their lead to 17-1 the following inning. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring seven runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Mercer. The score remained 17-1 for the rest of the game, as Minot State coasted to the win.
