ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Minot State women's hockey team got on a roll in St. Louis, not allowing a goal as they stormed through two opponents and into Saturday's semifinals at the ACHA Division I National Tournament.
Against a familiar foe in Midland in the semis, the Beavers kept rolling, scoring early and taking the lead three times in the contest only to see the Warriors use a third-period goal to steal a 4-3 victory.
The loss ends Minot State's season and sends Midland into the national championship game against Liberty on Sunday.
After beating the University of Colorado 9-0 on Wednesday, then Indiana Tech 5-0 on Friday to advance to the semifinals, the Beavers (26-7-1 overall) started off strong in their seventh meeting this season with WMCH-foe Midland as Alisa O'Hara found the back of the net with an unassisted goal with 3 minutes, 40 seconds gone in the action.
That triggered a see-saw scoring run as Midland responded with 9:07 gone in the contest, tying it 1-1, but
Ensley Fendelet quickly put Minot State back in front, scoring another unassisted goal just 2:09 later for a 2-1 Beaver lead.Â
Again, Midland answered with 3:47 left in the first period for a 2-2 score that only lasted a bit more than a minute.
O'Hara's second of the game, also unassisted, with 2:30 left until the break put the Beavers back in control, but only briefly as Midland tied it once again with 59 seconds left in a wide-open first period.
Then goals came tough to get as Minot State goalie
Jordan Ivanco - who recorded shutouts in the Beavers first two wins at nationals - turned aside 17 Midland shots over the final two periods while Warriors goalie Hannah Stone made 23 saves.
The only puck to get past either goalie the final two periods came off the stick of Midland's Kayla Flanigan, with an assist from Allison Rakowski, the game-winner with 3:58 gone in the third period.
