Jamestown, ND – The Minot State men's hockey team closed out their regular season campaign with an astonishing 31-2 record after their 2-1 victory over University of Jamestown Friday night. Not only did the Beavers defeat the Jimmies eight out of nine times the two top-ranked teams faced off this year, but MSU has done so while sporting a now 16-game win streak as they head into postseason play.
Hitting the ice at 7:30p.m., the puck went back and forth between UJ and MSU's skaters for the first twenty minutes of the game but never found it's way into the net, ending the first period with two zeros on the board.
Another fifteen minutes of play passed into the second period with scoreless hockey until
Brayden Pawluk and
Josh Pederson teamed up to put the Beavers on top of the Jimmies. At 15:17 Pawluk made a pass over to Pederson who sent the first goal of the night into the Jimmies' net, taking the lead 1-0. As the clock was ticking down the last 25 seconds of the second period, UJ's offense responded with a 3-skater assisted goal to tie up the competition 1-1 at the end of the second.
Coming onto the ice for the third and final period of the game with a tie of 1-1 put the Beavers into fight mode, looking to find a way to come out on top. A full ten minutes passed by with still no change in score until
Payton Jerome and
Josh Pederson worked to get the puck over to Jay Buccholz, who would find a way to whiz winning goal into the Jimmies' net. Minot State ended the night with a 2-1 victory in their ninth and final matchup against No. 9 University of Jamestown, along with closing out the final minutes on their 2021-2022 regular hockey season.
With a now .919 winning percentage sported by an undefeated record in all fifteen of the away games played this year, the No. 2 Beavers are sitting pretty as they prepare to head into the highly anticipated ACHA national tournament. The first game is set to take place in St. Louis, Missouri at 4:45p.m. on Friday, March 11th. Tournament schedule is to be announced.
