Defensive effort leads Minot State to road win over Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. -- The Minot State women's basketball team kept Wayne State to just 18.2 percent from deep, a 4-for-22 3-point shooting performance, on the way to a 70-57 victory over the Wildcats on the road Friday in NSIC action.

The Beavers (7-10 overall, 3-8 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Kennedy Harris who had a career-high 20 points. Kate Head tacked on 17 points and Jaime Skeggs helped out with 12 points off of the bench.

The Minot State offense was very productive from downtown, making 10 threes on 21 attempts. Harris was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining three treys in the contest.

The Minot State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Friday's game, forcing 13 Wayne State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Emma Mogen's three steals led the way individually for the Beavers.

Coach's Comments

"I am really proud of our young ladies!" coach Mike Brandt said. "They played with so much poise and toughness and finally got the first conference road win since I've been here. It seemed like, besides the first few minutes of the game, we were in control of the game on the road in a hostile environment. Very encouraging as we continue on this season."

How It Happened

After falling behind 11-2, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 7:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Vilborg Jonsdottir, to narrow its deficit to 11-9. Wayne State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Beavers down 20-15 entering the second quarter.

Minot State chipped away at that deficit and built a 30-29 lead before going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Head, to increase its lead to 37-29. The Wildcats cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 40-33 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four 3-point shots to account for 12 of its 25 points.

Minot State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jonsdottir, to expand its lead further to 49-33 with 5:35 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Wildcats had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 55-46 edge. Minot State knocked down two 3-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.

Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 58-48 before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 66-48 with 2:26 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-57 win.
