Minot State secures win with fourth-quarter comeback

MINOT, ND -- The Minot State women's basketball team rallied from a 46-42 deficit after the third quarter to defeat the Winona State Warriors 66-58 at home Friday in NSIC action.


The Beavers (8-11 overall, 4-9 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Kennedy Harris, who had 20 points and three steals. Emma Mogen added 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals, and Kate Head chipped in as well with 11 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals.


Breianna Smestad pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Minot State, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 17 second-chance points.
 

The Minot State defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 17 Winona State turnovers while committing eight. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Harris' three steals led the way individually for the Beavers.

"I am so proud of our young ladies tonight!" Minot State coach Mike Brandt said. "With three starters out - we were able to bond together, work hard, and show a lot of toughness and grit! Many players stepped up their game. That was a very satisfying victory! I am very proud of them."
 

How It Happened

Minot State started off strong, putting together a 13-9 lead heading into the second quarter. Minot State took advantage of three offensive rebounds to score four second-chance points out of 13 total in the period


Winona State rallied to take a 27-21 lead before Minot State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 1:28 mark in the second period to tie the game at 27, a score that would hold until halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 14 points.


Winona State proceeded to claw their way ahead after halftime, leaving Minot State trailing 46-42 as the game entered the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.


Winona State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 51-46 advantage before Minot State went on a 14-0 run to seize a 60-51 lead with 1:09 to go in the contest. The Warriors narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 66-58 win. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 24 total points.
