BISMARCK, N.D. - Minot State put together a big 236-yard showing on the ground, including 147 yards from Myles West, and three rushing touchdowns, but fell 27-23 to Mary on Saturday afternoon on the road at MDU Resources Community Bowl in the Battle of the Big Lake.

The Marauders improved to 1-8 on the year and 1-7 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, while the Beavers fell to 1-8 overall and 1-8 in conference matchups.

West led all Beavers rushers with a career-high 147 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, picking up 4.5 yards per carry. Erik Palmquist also added 42 yards on the ground, averaging 10.5 yards per carry.

James Mintmier reeled in one catch for 15 yards.

Minot State put together a strong performance on the ground, racking up 236 rushing yards while averaging 4.4 yards per carry and out-rushing Mary by 135 yards.

How It Happened

MSU found itself down early 3-0, but responded to take a 7-3 lead with 10:34 remaining in the second quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by West, his first of the game.

Trailing 17-7, the Beavers were driving late in the third quarter when the Marauders recovered a fumble at their own 31-yard line to stop Minot State's moment.

Mary then scored 10 more points, the final touchdown on a Jakob Petry 30-yard interception return for touchdown early in the fourth quarter before the Beavers put a touchdown on the board to narrow the advantage and make it a 27-14 game. Sam Buckhanan ran the ball in from 18 yards out for his first collegiate touchdown.

Minot State scored again with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter to narrow Mary's lead to 27-21 as West ran it in from a yard out, but all the Beavers could muster from there was a safety as time expired for the final 27-23 outcome.

Coach's Comments
"Obviously, a disappointing loss," Minot State coach Ian Shields said. "We started slow and didn't play well in the first half.

"Obviously, the turnovers killed us - the fumble as we're driving to score and then the pick 6.

"There were some missed opportunities in all three phases that we didn't take advantage of.

"I was proud of the resilience and fight our young men showed - we had an opportunity to win it in the 4th and we were a play or two away from winning it."
