MINOT, N.D. – Already having upset a No. 1 foe this season, the Beavers went for a second such upset Friday against newly crowned No. 1 Midland.
Taking an early lead, things looked good for No. 10-ranked Minot State, but the visiting Warriors used a second-period surge to grab the lead and held on for a 3-1 win over the Beavers at the Maysa Arena on Friday night.
The same two teams meet again on Saturday at the Maysa Arena at 3:45 p.m.
The Beavers (5-8-0 overall) started strong and looked to have netted an early lead with a power-play goal in the opening minutes of action, but the early edge was erased by an in-the-crease call.
Unfazed, Minot State eventually took a 1-0 lead with 4:16 left in the first as
Aspen Cooper did net a power-play goal for the Beavers, scoring off assists by
Gillian Gervin and
Cameron Schmidt.
But Minot State could not stretch the lead and Midland (14-0-1) eventually tied it with 8:14 gone in the second, then broke the time 2:21 later.
It proved to be just enough for the Warriors who never let the Minot State offense break through again, and with 1:04 left in regulation Midland added an empty-net goal to ice the win.
A hard-fought win between two teams that faced off in last year's ACHA National Semifinal that was won by Minot State.
The foes also have met three times already this season with Midland picking up all three of those wins.
Haylie Biever finished with 21 saves in Friday's contest for Minot State.
