MINOT, N.D. – The Beavers offense exploded late leading to a dramatic overtime victory.
Down a pair of goals to visiting and fifth-ranked Maryville midway through the third period, the 10
th-ranked Minot State women's hockey team found its offense, netting a pair of late goal to force overtime, then skated away with the 4-3 victory as time was expiring in the extra session Saturday afternoon at the Maysa Arena.
"It feels good to get one at home," said Minot State coach
Ryan Miner.
"I think we were just battling ourselves," he said of a recent offensive slump that changed quickly Saturday. "We would just try and try and try and nothing was working, and just putting in that extra effort and fighting to the net; and we didn't score any pretty goals today it was battle and grind and find the back of the net."
Which led to the comeback as the Beavers battled to even the score 1-1 with 4 seconds left in period No. 2 when
Mia Mckee scored her first of the season off a
Makena Welby assist.
The visiting Saints (9-5-0 overall) answered with an early third-period charge, looking to put the game away early by scoring a pair of goals in 3:04 for a comfortable 3-1 lead.
But not insurmountable, and the Beavers (5-7-0) began the comeback when
Paige Ackerman scored her first of the season of an
Erica Fijala assist with 9:35 left in regulation.
Battling to find the equalizer, the Beavers drew a penalty and cashed in with the man advantage as
Olivia Opheim scored off assists by
Krissy Rink and Ackerman, tying it 3-3 with 1:34 remaining.
A thrilling finish that got even more dramatic in overtime as
Haylie Biever made an early save on Sydney Poisson, who was left alone with the puck in front of the Minot State net.
Buoyed by the big save, the Beavers continued to battle until the final seconds when Welby fed a pass out of the corner to
Krissy Rink charging down the middle of the ice and she tipped it into the net with 2 seconds left in OT for the dramatic victory.
Biever finished with 29 saves in the win for Minot State, which is back in action at home next weekend hosting No. 2 Midland (Neb.) on Friday and Saturday at 3:45 p.m. both days.
