MINOT, N.D. – The home stand continues for the 10
th-ranked Beavers as another heavyweight matchup awaits the Minot State women's hockey team. Another rematch of last year's national tournament semifinals is in order, this time on the Maysa Arena ice surface.
The Beavers (5-7-0) will be tested heavily again this weekend when they host a gauntlet in the Midland Warriors (13-0-1), who are ranked No. 1 in the latest women's ACHA poll. Puck-drop is set for 3:45 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
A hard-hitting schedule gets even more difficult, as the 1
st-ranked Warriors come to the Magic City for another weekend series. Minot State is determined to meet the challenge after splitting with No. 5 Maryville last Saturday in a 4-3 overtime victory.
After being shut out for nearly 220 minutes, the Beavers broke a scoring drought late in the second period versus the Saints in their overtime win. Minot State hopes to ride the momentum from the overtime win into this upcoming series. Midland is coming off a rare tie, their first of the season. A 1-1 contest featuring a tight battle with the McKendree Bearcats.
The Warriors are led in scoring by Callie Maguire and Kayla Flanigan, who both have 20 points in 14 games played so far this year. That is good for a 1.43 points-per-game average. Maguire, along with Ally Rakowski, are tied for the team lead in goals with 11.
Hannah Stone leads the charge in net as the No. 1 option for the Warriors. Through nine games, she is 8-0-1 with only 10 goals against and a shutout to her name during that span. Those numbers are good for a .938 save percentage and 1.10 goals against average.
Scoring balance remains a key cog for the Beavers offensively.
Paige Ackerman leads the team in points from the back end, with six including five assists.
Krissy Rink has the team lead in goals with three of them. After that, it is a five-way tie of two goals split between
Paige Kozak,
Olivia Opheim,
Anna German,
Aspen Cooper, and
Gillian Gervin.
Haylie Biever remains steady in the crease for Minot. Despite a 4-7-0 record, she maintains a 2.18 goals against average, a .930 save percentage, and a shutout to boot through 11 games.
The two squads faced off with each other twice earlier in the season, with Midland getting the last laugh in both games. The Warriors got the upper hand, winning 3-1 and 4-0 back on September 29 and 30 respectively. Midland carries a 10-7-3 record all-time against the Beavers. Minot State is also facing a two-game losing streak to these Warriors, with hopes of putting it to a halt.
The Beavers put a cap to a four-game home stand this weekend versus the Midland Warriors. After that, they will go on the road to Jamestown next weekend to renew an in-state rivalry with the Jimmies. Both games will take place on Nov. 18 and 19.
