Beavers hold on to secure 5-3 win over Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Minot State women's hockey collected their fifth win in a row, but not without a valiant effort from the other side. The Beavers were back in Jamestown to face the Jimmies for the third time in less than a month and came away with the win to open the series.

It turned out to be a good game in the first period, with plenty of action on display. The No. 8 Beavers (10-9-0) tallied two goals early and late in the first to come away with a 2-1 lead after Jamestown (9-7-0) capitalized on a power play opportunity. The second period was a different story, as the Beavers broke through on three more goals to bring the total to five. Momentum shifted quickly though, as Jamestown netted two more to cut the lead down to two heading into crunch time. The Beavers settled things down to fend off the Jimmies' comeback efforts, winning by a final of 5-3.

Minot State starts the weekend series with a victory after defeating the University of Jamestown 5-3 on Friday night. Both teams will meet for the fourth time this season at Wilson Arena. Puck drop is at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow.

Gracie Perry got things started for the Beavers with her second goal of the season within the first five minutes of the first period. Paige Kozak not only scored towards the end of the first period, but she quickly got the ball rolling again in the second period with another tally to mark her fourth and fifth goals of the year. Paige Ackerman made it 4-1 midway through the second, followed by Kaitlyn Snyder's third of the year on a power play to wrap up the Beaver scoring. Makenna Beard and Riley Ball were dishing the puck all night. Beard recorded three helpers, while Ball had two in the middle frame. Snyder also added a helper to make it two points for her on the night.

Morgan Baker was called upon to start again, making 22 saves on 25 shots for the Beavers.

In a game of momentum swings, the Beavers found a way to close out the game in winning fashion. It was their 10th victory of the season, and the win puts them above .500 for the first time all year.

Minot State remains perfect against Jamestown this season, with a 3-0-0 record in all three tries. It also marks their 12th victory all-time against the Jimmies.
