SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Ben Bohl and Connor Hollenbeck combined to score 36 total points, but the Beavers fell to the 18th-ranked Northern State Wolves, 65-60 at Sanford Pentagon on Saturday in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinals.
The loss ends the season for Minot State, while Northern State advances to Monday's semifinals and will play the winner of Sioux Falls versus Upper Iowa.
The Beavers (11-17 overall) had two players score in double figures, led by Bohl, who had 19 points and two steals. Hollenbeck added 17 points and two blocks and Khari Broadway added eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
The Minot State offense was strong from beyond the arc, making eight threes on 19 attempts. Bohl hit five treys for the Beavers in the contest.
Coach's Comments
"Our guys played extremely hard tonight," Minot State head coach Matt Murken said. "That was a classic postseason grind-it-out game. Defensively we really executed and kept a good team out of rhythm. We went toe-to-toe with a Top 20-ranked team again tonight; we didn't get the job done but our guys have nothing to hang their heads about."
How It Happened
Trailing 9-0 early, Minot State went on a 13-3 run with 9:26 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Bohl, to grab a 13-12. The Beavers pushed the lead to 25-19 with 3:32 left in the first half on a Khari Broadway basket, then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 27-25 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 27 points.
After a Hollenbeck dunk put Minot State on top 29-27 early in the second half, the 18th-ranked Wolves went on an 11-2 run and never relinquished the lead again.
A Bohl 3-pointer with 8:50 left got the Beavers as close as 42-41 down, and a Cam'ron Dunfee basket with 2:22 remaining got Minot State as close as 56-55 back, but the Beavers were never able to regain the lead as Northern State held on for the win. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 33 points in the lane.
