LYNCHBURG, Va. – Upend Friday night, the Beavers bounced back like champions.
Taking control of the game early in the second period, the No. 1 Minot State men's hockey team erased a two-goal deficit and rolled to a 5-3 win over the sixth-ranked Liberty Flames.
Liberty, which posted a 5-1 win on Friday night, tried for the weekend sweep as they scored with 20 seconds left in the first period to snap a 1-1 tie, then took a 3-1 lead with 1:59 gone in the second.
The Beavers (29-3-0 overall) didn't let the Flames break free though as Minot State took control getting back on the scoreboard itself just 4:03 later on a goal by
Landyn Cochrane, then tying the game when
Drew Carter scored with 8:38 left in the second period.
The final period of the weekend then belonged to the No. 1 ranked team as
Sheldin Howard scored off a
Jay Buchholz assist with 7:40 gone for a 4-3 lead, then
Davis Sheldon iced the win, scoring off an
Eric Soar assist with 11 seconds left to play.
The last-second goal was Sheldon's second of the night as he tied it 1-1 with 5:37 left in the first period off assists from
Christian Kadolph and
Troy Hamilton.
Brayden Pawluk and
Reece Henry assisted on Cochrane's goal, and
Carter Barley and Cochrane set up Carter's game-tying goal.
Jake Anthony finished with 30 saves in goal in the win for Minot State, which is off for nearly two weeks before concluding the regular season with a home-and-home series against Jamestown, playing at Jamestown on Wednesday, March 8, then hosting the Jimmies on Thursday, March 9, at 7 p.m. at the Maysa Arena.
