Minot State volleyball battles but drops 2 matches on opening day of season

BILLINGS, MT – Minot State volleyball opened the season with a pair of close losses Friday at Montana State-Billings' tournament.

"These were competitive matches against talented teams," coach Alex Lehockey said. "Our unforced errors are what ultimately determined the outcome."

SOSU 3, MSU 1 -- The Minot State volleyball team lost Friday as the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm posted a four set (21-25, 26-24, 9-25, 24-26) victory at the Alterowitz Gymnasium. 

The non-conference loss dropped Minot State to 0-1 on the season.

The Beavers were led by a double-double from Maggie Machado, who registered 11 kills and 13 digs on the day. Bailee Brommenschenkel also added 10 kills to help the attack.Kendal Braun also pitched in with seven in the contest. On the defensive end, Braun chipped in for with 23 digs to go with three blocks from Taylor Wyatt

MSUB 3, MSU 2 -- The Minot State volleyball team lost 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 15-25, 29-27, 13-15) to the Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets Friday on the road at Alterowitz Gymnasium. 

The non-conference loss moved Minot State to 0-2 on the season. 

The Beavers were led by a double-double from Maggie Machado, who registered 14 kills and 30 digs on the day. Bailee Brommenschenkel also added 12 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Kendal Braun chipped in for with 29 digs to go with five blocks from Brommenschenkel. 

The Beavers are back in action against Black Hills State and Lubbock Christian on Saturday in the tournament.

How It Happened 

SET 1 | The Beavers found themselves in an early hole, losing the first set 25-21. Minot State trailed by as many as six points as Southeastern Oklahoma State grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that was knotted up two times before the Savage Storm took control. 

SET 2 | Minot State evened the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 second-set win. The Beavers came out on top of a tight second set, winning in a stanza that was tied seven times and had four lead changes. The Minot State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. 

SET 3 | Southeastern Oklahoma State grabbed a 2-1 match lead after defeating the Beavers in set three. The Beavers fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before losing the set 25-9. 

SET 4 | Minot State then fell in the fourth set 26-24 to finish off the match. The Beavers rallied from a nine-point hole at 15-6, but it wasn't enough as Southeastern Oklahoma State hung on to win the set.

How It Happened 

SET 1 | The Beavers found themselves in an early deficit, dropping a tight first set 25-23. Montana State-Billings grabbed the advantage for good at 23-22 in a set that was tied up five times before the Yellowjackets took over in the second half of the stanza. 

SET 2 | Minot State fought back after dropping the first set to take the second set 25-20, evening the match at one set apiece. The Beavers grabbed control of the set lead early on at 3-2 and never looked back. Minot State led by as many as seven points at 20-13 before finishing off the set. The Minot State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. 

SET 3 | Montana State-Billings went ahead 2-1 in the match after taking down the Beavers in set three. The Beavers fell in a tough set 25-15. Minot State trailed by as many as 11 points as Montana State-Billings grabbed the advantage for good at 3-2 in a set that was knotted up two times before the Yellowjackets took over the lead. 

SET 4 | Minot State then responded to win the fourth set 29-27 to force a fifth set. The Beavers persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured 10 lead changes and was tied 18 times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than three points along the way. 

SET 5 | Minot State was on the wrong side of a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but losing the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-13, to fall in the match. The Beavers took set five to the wire, but came up just short. Minot State was in it until the end of the set, holding the lead at 13-13 before Montana State-Billings rallied to grab a win in the stanza.
