MINOT, N.D. – It was a battle of wits as the Minot State women's hockey team gave themselves a chance against the number one team in the country. Midland University came to town to conclude another hard-fought series.
The No. 8 Beavers (11-10-1) went the distance against 1
st-ranked Midland University (21-0-2) in a game that needed a shootout. The first and second periods belonged to the Warriors, as they led 2-0 heading into the third. Midland scored the ice breaker at 9:06 of the first period on a power play opportunity. After the Warriors doubled their lead in the second, it looked like a tall hill to climb for the Beavers. Facing adversity, Minot State rises to the occasion as they came back down 2-0 to tie the game with less than a minute to go in regulation. A short-handed break, along with extended offensive zone pressure with the extra attacker would pay off for the Beavers. A scoreless overtime frame would result in a 2-2 finish.
Midland would go on to pick up the extra point after scoring once in the shootout.
Cameron Schmidt had the short-handed marker, followed by a great tip by
Riley Ball late in the game as each got their third goal of the season. Schmidt also added an assist on Ball's goal to complete a two-point output on the night.
Haylie Biever got the start in net once again for Minot State and made 22 saves on 24 shots.
Minot State showed tons of grit in a tie with No. 1 Midland. Coming up next for the Beavers will be a Midwest tour as they will play in three straight days versus Maryville, McKendree, and Lindenwood before leading up to the inaugural WMCH All-Star game.
