MINOT, N.D. – The Beavers got the offense rolling last weekend, now they get to see if that helps them continue a hot streak against an in-state rival.
Jamestown visits the Maysa Arena this Friday and Saturday, at 3:45 p.m. both days, and the 3
rd-ranked Minot State women's hockey team looks to extend a couple of win streaks.
The Beavers erupted for 13 goals in a weekend sweep over Arizona last weekend, and now are out for their 3
rd straight victory this season. And in the all-time series against 12
th-ranked Jamestown, Minot State is currently 17-0-0.
But things have changed a bit down south and Minot State head coach
Ryan Miner knows this weekend will be a big challenge for his team.
"I think playing a rival that's in-state is always fun competition," he said. "We've obviously had success against this team over the last couple years but every year they continue to get better."
In part, thanks to the addition of new head coach Hannah Griffin who coach Miner admits has brought more structure and an intensified work ethic to the Jimmies.
"They're going to come out and compete, and their goal is to beat us," Miner said. "We have to be prepared and obviously match that same level of energy and work ethic."
The start to the season has been a challenge for the Jimmies and their new coach, in part thanks to Griffin's former team where she was an assistant – Midland, who beat Jamestown 3-2 in overtime and 3-0 to start the season.
Jamestown bounced back to beat Arizona 8-1 on Sunday as the Jimmies come into the weekend with a 1-1-1 overall record and led by Kiran Vigteveen, who had 2 goals, and Gabriella Schroder, who has a goal and 3 assists for 4 points.
In goal, Lolah Drew has played all 3 games and has a 2.33 goals against average and a 0.936 save percentage for the Jimmies.
Meanwhile, the Beavers have had the same road as Jamestown, a pair of opening losses to Midland then a big bounce-back weekend against Arizona with 5-1 and 8-1 victories over the Wildcats.
Those two big offensive performances and wins gave Minot State a big sigh of relief, Coach Miner said.
"We know we're a skilled team and can score goals," he said. "It doesn't always come easy to us, but we've been working on it for a while and it finally showed in last weekend's games that we had the ability to make things happen.
"We just have to work for it, so we told the team throughout the week leading up to those games, and even this week, that you have to use your skill with purpose."
Showing off their goal-scoring skills last weekend were a quartet of Beavers with 2 goals apiece,
Journey Miller,
Mia Mckee,
Paige Kozak, and
Abby Tallman.
Meanwhile, in goal,
Haylie Biever made 20 saves in one win and
Morgan Baker got her first start of the season and made 17 saves in the other Minot State victory.
