Minot State shoots 50 percent from deep as they knock off UPR-Mayagüez, go 3-0 in Puerto Rico classic

San Juan, PR – The Minot State men's basketball team shot 50 percent from deep on the way to an 89-67 win over the UPR-Mayagüez Tarzans on Saturday.

The Beavers (5-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Caleb Van De Griend, who secured a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Jalen Cook tacked on 19 points and two steals, while Jaxon Gunville helped out with 13 points.

Led by Van De Griend's 8 offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.

The Minot State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 13 UPR-Mayagüez turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Van De Griend's three steals led the way individually for the Beavers.

The Beavers finish off a fun road trip to Puerto Rico, going a perfect 3-0 in San Juan.
 
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 19-13 advantage, Minot State went on a 9-0 run with 11:31 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Cook, to increase its lead to 28-13. The Beavers then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 45-30 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the frame, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 45 points.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 13-0 run, finished off by Sam West's layup, to grow the lead to 76-56 with 4:25 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 89-67 win. Minot State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting six shots from deep to score 18 of its 44 points.
