Defensive effort not enough as Minot State falls to St. Cloud State 63-51

MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team held St. Cloud State to just 36.8 percent shooting from the field, but fell 63-51 to the Huskies at home Friday.

The Beavers (1-8, 0-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Sydney Gustavsson, who had 16 points and seven rebounds. Maya Aguilar added 11 points and two steals and Jessica Mogen chipped in as well with 10 points off the bench.

Minot State's defense held St. Cloud State to only 36.8 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Beavers fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 29-20 by the time halftime rolled around.

St. Cloud State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 34-20 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Mogen, to trim its deficit to 34-26 with 6:13 to go in the third. St. Cloud State countered and stretched its lead to 48-32 heading into the fourth. Minot State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.

St. Cloud State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-35 advantage before Minot State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Emma Mogen's layup, to shrink the deficit to 52-42 with 6:30 to go in the contest. St. Cloud State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 63-51.
