MINOT, N.D. – It is down to the last two home games remaining for Minot State women's hockey. Another regular comes to town, a familiar foe in the Jamestown Jimmies where they and the Beavers will close out the regular season.
The No. 4 Beavers (18-10-1) will get another taste of Jamestown (13-14-0) for two games, both scheduled at 3:45 p.m. (CT) on Friday and Saturday.
This weekend is also a time of celebration, as the Beavers will honor their six Seniors on Saturday. Forwards
Riley Ball,
Gillian Gervin,
Gracie Perry, defensemen
Anna German,
Aspen Cooper, and goaltender
Haylie Biever will dawn the Beaver jerseys for one last time at Maysa Arena. On top of Senior festivities, fans of all ages can also enjoy free admission to all Minot State games at the Maysa this weekend. It goes for both women's games versus Jamestown and for the men's games when they welcome Simon Fraser University.
To go along with free entry, the Minot State hockey community will be helping to spread awareness for one of their own. Dave Schlecht has been a longtime member of the Minot State hockey programs and was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Small Cell Cancer. Both teams will be hosting a free will offering and silent auction in the Community Room to help Dave and his family fight this terrible disease.
Minot State sits quietly on a seven-game winning streak, as they start to get red hot at the perfect time. The Beavers did everything in their power to hold off Assiniboine Community College last weekend. They are coming off a 3-0 win over the Cougars, carrying all sorts of momentum.
On the other hand, Jamestown is going the opposite direction at the worst time. They are on a three-game slump, with their most recent a 5-1 loss to Midland. The Jimmies will be hungry after they nearly pulled off the upset last Wednesday night in Minot.
Looking at the scoring matchups, Crystal Wale of Jamestown and Minot's
Paige Ackerman will be one to observe. Wale leads the Jimmies with 18 points. Ackerman counters with 16 points in an impressive showing from the back end. In the goal-scoring battle, Wale will certainly be one to watch out for again as she leads at the top with 10 goals for Jamestown. Her counterpart is Beaver forward
Krissy Rink, as she mixes in eight to pace Minot State.
The goaltenders will be another fun duel to watch, as is evident in the 2-1 decision back on February 7. Although Jamestown likes to roll with a tandem, the netminder who got the start last time between these two was Makenzie Gibson. Her numbers are marked at a 2.01 goals-against average and .940 save percentage. Compare those to
Haylie Biever, the number one option for Minot State and one of the six Seniors. The goals-against average is nearly identical at 2.02, with a .930 save percentage and her numbers on the rise as of late. Biever, however, has the edge in shutouts with two of them this season as they both came just this past weekend.
It is only fitting that the Beavers wrap up the season against a familiar in-state foe, and that is Jamestown as both teams will meet for the seventh and eighth time this year. The Beavers own 15 wins all-time versus the Jimmies and hope to bring that number up even further. Take note once more: fans get free admission for all Minot State games at Maysa Arena this weekend, so take charge of this opportunity. Another reason to go is to catch the six Seniors playing in their final home game.
Riley Ball,
Gillian Gervin,
Gracie Perry,
Anna German,
Aspen Cooper, and
Haylie Biever will be honored for their time and dedication to the women's hockey program.
Regular season play comes to a close for the Beavers after they get done with Jamestown on Saturday. In less than a week, Minot State will be on their way to Lynchburg, VA to compete in the WMCH Conference Tournament. The three-day event will take place from February 22 through the 24
