MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State women's basketball team got a 16-point performance from the bench, but fell 55-41 to the Concordia, Saint Paul Golden Bears at home Saturday in NSIC action.
Sydney Gustavsson led the Beavers (9-20 overall, 6-14 NSIC) with eight points and seven rebounds. Maya Aguilar also tacked on eight points and six rebounds off the bench and Ashley Wacha chipped in as well with six points from the bench.
Led by Gustavsson's four offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in seven second-chance points.
Minot State's defense held Concordia, Saint Paul to only 34.5 percent shooting from the field, including 26.7 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Concordia, Saint Paul kept adding to that lead, building a 26-11 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Peyton Breidenbach, to narrow its deficit to 26-16. Concordia, Saint Paul responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Beavers trailing 31-19 heading into halftime.
Following halftime, Minot State kept the Golden Bears from growing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lorelei McIver, to trim its deficit to 35-29 with 3:23 to go in the third. Concordia, Saint Paul countered and stretched its lead to 41-33 heading into the fourth. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 55-41. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
