Kelley racks up 4 RBIs in Minot State's 12-3 victory

MINOT, N.D. -- Junior Abbey Kelley collected four RBIs to help propel the Minot State Beavers past the Providence Argonauts 12-3 in the final game of the day at the 2024 Bubble Invite softball tournament on Saturday.


Sophomore Calley Olson (1-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State (3-0 overall). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on six hits.


Kelley went 3-for-3 with a double and two walks in addition to her four RBIs for the Beavers. Senior Taryn Bennett put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Senior Izzy Penner also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, two walks and an RBI.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Kelley came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board.


The Argonauts failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Minot State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Bennett, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Beavers.


Providence narrowed Minot State's lead to 5-1 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 7-1 in the third inning. The Beavers scored twice, with one run coming across on Kelley's single.


The Argonauts gained ground, closing the gap to 7-3 until Minot State added some insurance in the fourth. Penner crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Beavers, bringing the score to 8-3 in favor of Minot State.


The Beavers kept Providence scoreless before finishg the win the following inning. The Minot State offense piled up four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Kelley that ended the game by the 8-run mercy rule.
