Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 15 Minot State falls 81-79 to No. 9 MSU Moorhead on buzzer-beater

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The 15th-ranked Minot State men's basketball team fell to the 9th-ranked Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons 81-79 on the road Thursday in NSIC action on Ja'Kair Sanchez's buzzer-beating 3-pointer as time expired.

The Beavers (18-5 overall, 13-4 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Connor Hollenbeck, who had 23 points and seven rebounds. Khari Broadway added 19 points and two steals and eclipsed 2,000 career points in the game and now has 2,006 in his collegiate career, while Ben Bohl chipped in as well with 12 points and two steals.

The loss was the second time this season the Dragons beat the Beavers based on a last-second 3 as then No. 2-ranked MSU Moorhead beat Minot State on a missed Beavers 3, 77-74, at the MSU Dome back on December 16.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 10-7 advantage, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 12:16 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Jaxon Gunville, to increase its lead to 17-7. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 31-30.

Minnesota State Moorhead kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 54-44 advantage before Minot State went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Gunville's three, to even the score at 54 all with 11:13 to go in the contest. The Beavers could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Dragons outscored them 27-25 the rest of the way to hand Minot State the 81-79 loss.

A see-saw finish as the teams traded the lead six times in the final 5 minutes with a pair of Hollenbeck free throws giving Minot State a 79-78 lead in the final minute before Sanchez's game-winner just before the buzzer.
