MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. – Another overtime? That is no problem for the Minot State women's hockey team. After a day off waiting for their next opponent to emerge from the loser-out round, the Beavers matched up with the Bearcats from McKendree University in the quarterfinals.
Just when the Beavers had finished off a chaotic first-round matchup, they got themselves into another sudden death situation after a 1-1 tie went past 60 minutes of regulation. And just like that, the Beavers ended up the victorious as they wasted no time ending it early for the 2-1 win and semifinal berth.
It was a tight defensive contest early, as no pucks found the back of the net after one period. After a quick regroup for the second period, the Beavers picked up the first goal in a timely manner. Within the first five minutes of the second, they scored to go ahead 1-0 at 4:16. The Beavers would leave the middle frame up by one score heading into the third.
As time rolled on, more pressure would build on McKendree's side. The Bearcats would keep chomping at the bit and the Beavers trying to hang on to a 1-0 lead would lose it at the 18:14 mark, as a costly penalty gave McKendree an advantage to tie the game late. After a brief minute and 46 seconds, the horn sounded to end regulation. Thus, another overtime was in order for Minot State.
Shortly after puck drop in the extra session, the Beavers put on their work boots and took it upon themselves to finish it off early at 2:32 of overtime and punch their ticket to the ACHA National Tournament semifinals. The final from St. Louis was 2-1.
Who was going to be the hero next?
