Beavers drop game 3 and 4 on final day of Yellowjacket Volleyball Invitational

BILLINGS, MT --The Minot State volleyball team took on both Black Hills State University and Montana State University-Billings on Saturday at Alterowitz Gymnasium. In game one, the Beavers could not overcome a potent Yellow Jackets offense falling to Black Hills State in straight sets (20-25, 23-25, 13-25). In game two, the Beavers lost to the Montana State University-Billings Yellowjackets 3-0 (22-25, 19-25, 14-25).

The non-conference losses move Minot State to 0-4 on the season.

In game one, Paulina Kowalska finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Beavers offense. Got 11 digs from Kelci Madrid along with five blocks from Taylor Wyatt to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Beavers fell behind early, losing the first set 25-20. Black Hills State grabbed the advantage for good at 19-18 in a set that was knotted up seven times before the Yellow Jackets took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | A 25-23 set-two loss put Minot State in a 2-0 hole in the match. The Beavers fell in a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team led by more than three points along the way.

SET 3 | Black Hills State finished off the sweep with a set-three win. The Beavers lost the first point and never took the lead before losing the set 25-13.

In game two, Taylor Wyatt finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Beavers offense. Got nine digs from Viktoria Sedova to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Beavers found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-22. Montana State-Billings grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that was tied up two times before the Yellowjackets took control.

SET 2 | Minot State fell in set two 25-19, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. Minot State trailed by as many as six points as Montana State-Billings grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that was knotted up seven times before the Yellowjackets took over the lead.

SET 3 | Minot State couldn't prolong the match and lost in set number three. The Beavers fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-14.

With the 2024 Yellowjacket Volleyball Invitational coming to a close, it was announced that Minot State's Paulina Kowalska was named to the all-tournament team.

Minot State will be back in action for their home opener during Homecoming weekend on Friday September 13 and Saturday September 14 at the MSU Dome. The Beavers will be taking on Medicine Hat at 12:30pm and University of Jamestown at 6:30pm on Friday. The Beavers will also be taking on Brandon University at 11:00am and Mayville State University at 4:30pm on Saturday.
