MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team went into the half trailing Minnesota-Duluth 37-29, but rallied from the deficit to take down the Bulldogs 58-48 at home Saturday.
The Beavers (6-15, 5-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Emma Mogen, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Maya Aguilar added 13 points and six rebounds and Jessica Mogen helped out with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Minot State collected 44 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Minnesota-Duluth's 43, led by Jessica Mogen's 11 boards.
Minot State's defense held Minnesota-Duluth to only 19.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29.7 percent from the field. The Beavers also limited Myra Moorjani to 2-of-10 shooting from downtown and 10 points in the game. The Bulldogs did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed 12 second chance points while Minot State cleared 37 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Minnesota-Duluth kept adding to that lead, building a 28-22 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 28-27. Minnesota-Duluth responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Beavers trailing 37-29 heading into halftime.
Minot State came out of halftime on fire, going on a 14-0 run, punctuated by a three from Jaime Skeggs, to grab a 43-37 lead with six seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Minot State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 58-48 with 18 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Minot State got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring five fast break points.
